Steering Wheels (Group 6.513)
The Chevelle 300 came with a simple 3-spoke wheel with center horn button.
Color coordinated to match the interior, the steering wheel came in
black, blue, gold, and saddle. Also note no dash strip above the glove
box door.
The 300 Deluxe steering wheel closely resembled the 1967 300 Deluxe
series with its 3-spoke design. Also note no dash strip above the glove
box door.
The Malibu steering wheel was a new design for 1968. While the general
3-bar configuration was carried over from 1967, the entire design differed.
The steering wheel was color coordinated with the interior, contained
two horn buttons on the horizontal bars and a Malibu identification
emblem at the top in the center. Also note bright trim dash strip above
the glove box door with Malibu script.
When one of the various Concours options was ordered on a Malibu sport
coupe or sport sedan the dash strip above the glove box was changed
from a bright strip to woodgrain with Concours script.
The standard steering wheel for a Concours-optioned Malibu sport coupe
and sport sedan
(and suspected for the 4-door sedan as well) had its own emblem.
The Concours-optioned Malibu also got a wood-grain dash strip above
the glove box with a "Concours script emblem.
The SS396 wheel is essentially the same as the Malibu wheel but incorporated
an SS396 identification emblem in place of the Malibu identification
emblem. On SS396 models the steering wheel and dash controls area was
done in black regardless of the interior color. The upper dash
area along with the glove box area remained color coordinated with the
interior. Those with white interiors had the complete dash done
in black along with black carpeting, whether Malibu or SS396. Also note
bright trim dash strip above the glove box door with SS396 script.
The simulated wood steering wheel was the same as the simulated wood
steering wheel from 1967 and was available on any 1968 Chevelle as option
RPO N34.

Door Panels
The base 300 series door panels lacked a little of the ornamentation
found on the 300 Deluxe door panels (see below) but styling was generally
the same. Note the color coordinated knobs for the vent wing and window
regulator handle as well as the door locks.
The 300 Deluxe series door panels were a bit more upscale. Note the
color coordinated knobs for the vent wing and window regulator handle
as well as the door locks.
300 Deluxe coupe with Pontiac interior
300 Deluxe coupe with Oldsmobile interior
The Malibu series door panels were upgraded with better materials, a
different design and a bright 'scuff guard' behind the door handle.
The standard SS396 door panels were the same as the Malibu door panels
with the exception of the SS396 emblem in lieu of the Malibu emblem.
Those SS396 Chevelles and Malibus with either the Concours option or
some (not all) Buick/Olds/Pontiac replacement interiors received special
door panels. Note the extra bright trim, carpeted lower panel, longer
arm rest, and lack of any Malibu or SS396 identification emblem.

It is interesting to note that no Chevelle series nameplates (Deluxe, Malibu, or SS396) were used with alternate interiors on the door panels.
