Steering Wheels (Group 6.513)

11/15/2010
The Chevelle 300 came with a simple 3-spoke wheel with center horn button.  Color coordinated to match the interior, the steering wheel came in black, blue, and fawn.

The 300 Deluxe wheel added bright trim on the 3 spokes and a new center horn button. Note the two horizontal bright trim arms do not have provisions for the horn buttons as do the Malibu, Concours, and SS396 steering wheels below do.

11/15/2010
The standard Malibu and Concours steering wheel. Note the "CHEVELLE" on the horn button as opposed to "SS" on the SS396 below. This steering wheel was also optional on the Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe under RPO N30.

12/17/2016
Steering wheels were color coordinated with the interior color, even on SS396 Chevelles. Note the long hazard warning flasher knob on this early Chevelle. A short version of this knob began replacing this long version in late December but these were still being used as late as the March/April time frame as supplies were exhausted.

11/15/2010
The standard SS396 steering wheel was identical to the Malibu and Concours steering wheel with the exception of the "SS" horn button in place of the standard "CHEVELLE" button. The SS horn button identification was new for 1967.

11/15/2010
Available at extra cost was this simulated Walnut wood steering wheel under RPO N34 ($31.60) and available on any model. Note the horn button was moved to the center of the steering column and the distinctive 3-spoke design.

Door Panels

Clean, simple design of the Chevelle 300 door panel.

The Chevelle 300 Deluxe added a little more style and the center section was a darker fawn or blue resulting in a two-tone scheme. As one would expect, a black interior had a solid black panel.

The Malibu, Concurs, and SS396 shared the same door panel design. Eight raised horizontal ribs broken up by 4 bright medallions on a flat surface.

Instrument Panel - Group 10.000

Although the 1966 and 1967 Chevelle instrument panels enjoy the same general shape, there are many differences such as trim, emblems, dash pads, switches etc. See my 1966/1967 Chevelle Reference CD for year-specific information.

Instrument Cluster

1966

1967

Although the 1966 and 1967 instrument panels are similar, there are several differences:
** The spacing between the numbers on the lens is different.
** The 1967 cluster has provision for high beam indicator lamp.
** The warning and indicator lamps in the two lower rectangular pods are different. On a non-gauge cluster (as both of these are) both years used the left pod for oil and water temp indicator lamps but the 1966 model year used the right pod for generator and high beam while the 1967 model year used this for the generator and parking brake lamp.

One should disregard the column shift automatic of the 1967 image as opposed to the 1966 image which is either a manual 3-speed column shift or manual/automatic floor shift cluster. The same transmission shift location would be used for both years with the same transmission/shift combination.

When RPO U14 Special Instrumentation was ordered, the left rectangular pod changed to just the high beam indicator and the right pod to parking brake warning lamp for both years. The spacing of the speed numbers remained the same as a non-instrument cluster.

Often incorrectly called "SS gauges" RPO U14 was available on any V8 Malibu sport coupe, convertible, or sedan pickup as an option beginning with the 1966 model year. Shown here in a 1967 V8 Malibu sport coupe.

In the 1969 model year RPO U14 could be ordered on the 13427 and 13437 300 Deluxe series when RPO Z25 (SS Equipment) was ordered as well. The 1971 and 1972 model years saw the U14 option expand to any V8 sport coupe, convertible, or sedan pickup regardless of series. When ordered in any 1970, 1971, or 1972 non-SS sport coupe, convertible, or sedan pickup, it came with the round pod gauge dash in lieu of the non-RPO U14 linear dash.
